Retrospective: March 07, 08

Dear All in Christ -

It's certainly was a stunning (only some will understand why I use this word :) for those who are clueless we will discuss this next time) night last Friday. The fellowship and the subsequent discussion I hope has heightened every bodies hopes and expectations for the future of this bible study -

Just to recap - here is what we decided
  1. We decided to go Bible book based (though only 3/11 voted for this - ha!!!). We decided to start with the Gospel of John Chapters 1 & 2
  2. The study will span a time period of 1hrs (from start to finish)
  3. The format will be - directed study, taught by Brian or myself (please do remember us in your prayers) followed by 15 to 20 minutes of discussion
  4. Major part of the discussion will be done on the blogosphere
  5. We decided to meet biweekly - minimum of two times a month

Btw guys, what did you all think about the Food!!!???? Profusely thank Anson so that he may cook for us next time -

Our Next Meeting will be on March 28th at 7:30p at Anson's house. Please read through Gospel of John Chapter 1&2

Later guys- get blogging

Letti made a good suggestion on Friday about including commentaries on the gospels when we study the Word.

As always, we should be praying and asking for wisdom and insight when reading, but including commentaries can bring what we read into context and provide alternate viewpoints to the same information.

I'll be poking through amazon.com for some good commentaries, but does anyone know of any good authors?

I really enjoyed the discussion and the food.

From what I have read, and from Anson's suggestion, William Barclay's book is well acclaimed and well written.

Another suggestion I would like to make is this - commentaries should act as references.

What I have seen is this -commentaries include lots of historically references, circumstantial deductions as well as writings from other books outside the bible - like the book of Maccabeus etc.

We have to be careful when we read commentaries - not to confuse the actual context with the references in the commentary.

What commentaries do is that it should compliment your knowledge after you have made the biblical references as your foundation.

I personally thought the discussion and the food were "stunning" :) We had good participation although we were polling the polls and ended up going with the least polled which made more sense to everyone.

I think we should start with the gospels as we decided and integrate the foundations of Christianity as we wade through the waters and gain insight. This is an awesome group and I believe great things will happen through our small group study.

Thank You Anson & Lincy, Bobby & Juine for the hospitality and excellent food.

Have a blessed week!

Hey
I wanted to make a suggestion. Everyweek when we meet can we memorize a verse from John and recite it. I think we stop memorizing scirptures after we turn 18 since there is no more sunday school. It is so important to do this so we can have it on hand when questions arise. What do you guys think??

Another suggestion is to have a kid's bible study so that they also learn something.

Sincerely
Kuyil
