Hi All -
It was edifying and thought provoking - our discussion on Worship. As promised last Friday, here is continuing that discussion on the Blog. I have compiled some thought on this matter. Unfortunatly it goes miles and miles! Add your to the end.
Jewish Perspective on Worship
According to the law given to Moses, all Jews everywhere were to come to the temple (Jerusalem or wherever the temple was) for Worship. Hence the statement by the Samaritan woman - John 4:19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
Deut 12:5 says (talking to the Jews) that God will to find a place, to put his name there for His dwelling. And where he dwelled, the people were to bring sacrifices, offering etc and come for worship. Temple was the place where God himself dwelled (Shekhinah), hence the requirement to come to the temple for worship – e.g. Ps 132:7. In the same chapter Deut 12: 11-13, God reiterates this requirement, stressing its importance.
Deut 12:13,14 clearly warns against private alters and sacrifices. This was the reason why Hezekiah in 2 Kings 18:22 destroyed all private places of worship (important to note that these were alters to the Lord not to pagan idols).
Joshua describes to us what was involved in OT worship - Joshua 22:27 “… that we will worship the LORD at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and fellowship offerings.” From several Psalms we know that worship also involved physical show of humility– bowing down and kneeling (Ps 95:6) etc
If the temple was unreachable, and someone was lead to worship, he or she would face the temple direction and bow down (Ps 5:7; 2 Chronicles 29:28) – because in the temple resided the Shekhinah of God and his holy presence. This explains why Daniel prayed facing Jerusalem. It was in recognition of the presence of God.
Attitude in Worship
There are attitudes in worship that is true even in modern times. Reverence (Ps 5:7), fear (Ps 22:23), Honor and Respect (Mal 1:6), give your best to God (Mal 1:7-8, 13, 14 having this attitude), delighting in Worship instead of considering it with contempt or burden (Mal 1:13).
Having detailed some of the facets of OT worship, we get a peripheral understanding of what Worship was, what God intended, and what Worship involved. Nevertheless we only have a blurry idea of the exact definition of Worship.
The New Worshiper
In His conversation with the Samaritan woman, Christ was rewriting and establishing a new way of worship (John 4:23(a) – “Yet a time is coming and has now come when …). He was not changing the meaning of worship, or the attitudinal requirements or it’s intend. Instead He was redefining the procedure and establishing a new standard.
He was establishing that the age of worshiping at Jerusalem (temple worship or in any mountain) and the age of sacrifices, festivals etc are over. A new age is coming and has come, where true worshipers will worship God the Father in Spirit and Truth.
He effectively made worship free from the restriction of time, place and regulation and made it ubiquitous.
What does it mean to “Worship in Spirit and Truth?”
“In Spirit”: means a worshiper with these experiences (listed below) or anyone who believes in these and are waiting on Lord’s time for its fulfillment in their life
- “Born (regenerated) of the Spirit” (John 3:5,6)
- led by the spirit (Rom 8:4,5,6,9,13,14,16 )
- Sealed by the Spirit (Eph 4:30)
- Indwelling of the Spirit (Act 19:1-6)
“In Truth”: Two times in separate settings, Jesus ascribes the word “Truth” to himself
- John 14:6- "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except throughme. ..” Christ is the only access to Father (GOD). So your worship should be in Truth (or the Worship should be in the name of Christ)
- In his conversation with Pilot - John 18:37 - "… Everyone on the side of truth listens to me”
God the Father is looking for Worshipers who are filled, led, born and sealed by the spirit and who believes and have put faith in Christ (the Truth, Son of God and Lamb of God) and in his sacrifice and fail not to obey his commandments.
It is not enough to just worship in Spirit or just to come in the name of Jesus, Both these experience should be personal and co-existent.
NT Worship: We come together in His Name
In Mat 18:20 (“For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them”)
We see that it is in the community of believers and in the unity of purpose the physical presence of Jesus is manifested. A plurality of believers is emphasized in this verse. When we come together in the name of Jesus, and if we are united in purpose, the father in heaven works on our behalf or we worship him. Christ which was absent in the OT worship is a key component when we come together today. Further emphasizing worshiping in Truth
Private/Personal Worship
It is true that private (personal) worship is neither prohibited nor encouraged or even mentioned in the NT order of worship (correct me if I am wrong here). But neglecting corporate gathering is warned in Heb 10:25.
Moreover there are only a handful of instances of private personal worship in the whole bible, which is valid in extraneous circumstances. We should be careful against making the uncommon the norm. We will be led or we may desire to worship in our private realm, in doing so, we should be careful not to neglect or consider insignificant - corporate worship.
Church
In the bible Jesus was the first to use the word Church. Apart from when talking to Peter, in Mat 18:17 He specifically talks about how the members in the Church should resolve a problem. It is interesting to note that he did not use the words “synagogue” or “temple”. It was in his mind well before his death that the collection of NT worshipers should be called “Church”. It is also in this context that he uses the now famous verse – “… For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” How marvelous it is this understanding - when we come together for worship in his name, Jesus himself, though invisible is present among us.
All the epistles were written to the Church except for Timothy, Philemon etc. Jesus critiques the Church as a whole in Revelation - “to the angel of the church….”
Church is and will be an unavoidable reality of Christianity. We should associate with a Church that worships in Truth and Spirit and that which believes in the complete Gospel
The Benefit of Corporate Worship or a Church
If nothing else, corporate worship/gathering helps in the sharing of Spiritual gifts and spurring one another to do better and achieve greater spiritually which is impossible in a private realm.
- 1 Cor 14:26 “what then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.”
- Heb 10:25 : “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” This verse indicates that we need to increase the number of meetings as days go by.
Songs and Hymn in Worship
It should be self explanatory from these verses that Hymns and Songs were integral in worship.
- 2 Chronicles 20:18, 19: "Jehoshaphat bowed with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD. Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with very loud voice."
- 2 Chronicles 29:28: “The whole assembly bowed in worship, while the singers sang and the trumpeters played. All this continued until the sacrifice of the burnt offering was completed.”
- Psalms 50 and 73–83 are associated with Asaph, as the master of his choir, to be sung in the worship of God. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psalms)
- 1 Cor 14:26 “what then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn….”
Propriety and Order in Worship
Corporate worship demands order. Again emphasizing a group
- 1 Kings 10:6-8: When everything came together in order as per requirement, the glory of God descended and worship was possible in the 2nd temple
- 2. Heb 9:6: "When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. "
- 1 Cor 14:26-40: Likewise without order, worship not possible in the NT church. Paul write to Corinthians about Orderly worship
We Worship an emotional but perfect God!
We worship an emotional God. He is not emotionless – all these emotions in perfect measure can be attributed to our God - anger, Love, sympathy, joy etc. if you are skeptical, read the books on Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Even then if you are unconvinced let me know. Our God will be moved emotionally by our Worship if it is in Truth and Spirit.
God made us as emotional being, because he made us in his image. In that sense, we also have the freedom to worship God with our emotion. A word of caution here - our emotions are to follow the overflowing/burden of our heart.
- 1 King 9:1: “…. My eyes and my heart will always be there...” God the Father emotionally moved after the consecration of the 1st temple
- God the Son - Christ showed empathy at Lazarus’s grave – He wept!
- Heb 5:7: Jesus during his days on the earth prayed with loud cries and tears
- Warning against grieving the Holy Spirit – Eph 4:30 “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God”
In worship our emotions should follow the overflowing of the heart. In an orderly environment, shouting out praise, crying for Joy, praising, emotionally moved by a song because of the majesty of its words and the majesty of our God is all part of worship. In a spirit filled environment outpouring of the heart is one facet of Worship. So let us shake off our inhibitions!!!!!

This was a very good explanation about the practice of worship! However I’m still not sure if we have completely answered what one does when they intend to worship. Many examples speak of bowing to worship, kneeling to worship, laying face down to worship, leaning over to worship…but it’s what is done after the kneeling, bowing, laying, etc is done that is in question in my mind.
I have always believed that worship is the intentional and willing submission and desire to express complete gratitude and love and appreciation to God. This leaves a bit of liberty for the worshipper. 2 main questions should be asked: is what I’m doing as an expression of worship sincere; and is what I’m doing as an expression of worship sinful? If you are sincere and it is not sinful, then it is worship in my mind.
For example if someone is intentionally closing their eyes and concentrating towards God and essentially willing their feelings towards him then this could be worship…the general feeling I have regarding worship is reverence and thankfulness and a feeling of humility and submission. Worship can also include making deliberate and conscious sacrifices, such as realizing you are about to do something sinful, but catching yourself and thanking the father while walking the other way as you are choosing to walk by the spirit.
Good explanation of worship luke and guapo.
My opinion: Faith is the ultimated foundation of worship.
You are expressing thankfulness to a Living God who forgave all your sins and gives you whatever you ask in His name. But there is an ALTHOUGH TO IT. How in the world do we produce faith?
Look at 2 Peter 1:3. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith: goodness, and to goodness knowledge, and to knowledge, selfcontrol and to selfcontrol, preserverance, godliness, and to godliness, brotherly kindess and to brotherly kindess, love.
Faith must be presented in certain steps. It is through our action, growth in Christian character.
By knowing Gods word, loving others, preservering, having self control.
There is not one thing but several things that brings out our faith.
So until we learn to do this, we wont be able to worship Him in truth and in spirit. Just as we need to several things to climb the ladder at work, at school, we need to do several things in spirtual life as well. Resembling Christ means serving others, which ultimately brings unity, and love and then it will brings us to worship together.
Anybody can worship privately but it takes a lot of steps to get all of us together to worship. I myself can worship freely when i am by myself by bowing down, crying out, shouting, but i dont do the same thing when i am with my fellow brothers and sisters because of the mere fact that I have not come to the sixth step that Paul explains about brotherly kindness.
Right now when i worship, i am at a distance trying to cry out to God. I cant claim that i have reached the stage of worshipping Him in spirit and in truth because the two things that brings us to that is faith and love.
Here are some verses:
1st peter 4:8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Romans 12:10 reveals that it is through brotherly kindness that we can have "kind affection" toward one another. It is brotherly kindness, therefore, that provides a true sense of family in our association as members of the Lord's body.
Without sincere love for brothers , any claim to know God or
love Him is impossible - cf. 1 Jn 4:7-8,20-21
.
Jn 13:34-35
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another
Ep 4:3 3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
Ep 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love
-- "Pray for one another" (Ja 5:16), and there will be brotherly
Kindness

The chapter worship in truth and in spirit is very deep and large subject which we cannot explain completely in words by words.

WORSHIP
The literal meaning - to treat somebody or something as deity and show respects by engaging in acts of prayer or devotion is the WORSHIP. Before we go thru spiritual worship we should understand the stage and situation of human triune body is like this.- -
Man is created in the image and likeness of GOD. Yes, Man is created in triune form that is soul, spirit and body. The body is visible and the other two are invisible. The visible body is taken from the dust. And this visible body is called the outer man or outer body. The invisible personality of man or the so called inner man is the combination of soul + spirit.
At the time of the death, the soul and spirit separates from the body and it goes to its place where predestined. And the body rests in the dust that is at the cemetery. We call the death means the separation of human body from the spirit & soul.
Whilst the first couple did the sin at Garden of Aden, the inner man became dead at the site, and due to the punishment (the wages of sin is death) the outer body which covers the soul & spirit get started to keep on dying day by day. Thus a child when he born into the world his body is undergoing for mortal procedure. And slowly slowly he travels to the deathbead and ultimately he reaches to the dust/cemetery.
We have to understand that the spirit and soul of a man is called the INNERMAN got life thru the hearing of gospel, (by faith, and by grace and not by merit) born again and got new life and became new a New-creature. He got a new conscious and as he got a new life, his name was placed in the book of life as well. Now he is an inheritant to heaven. And he is not afraid to call heavenly father as his father and father do not shame on this redeemed child to call as His Child. Because he is born from HIM, (reason being blood of Jesus and by and thru the Holy Spirit).
Once he got the new life, the new born man has to show respects to God and worship God by engaging in prayer or devotion. He has to live for his Master, He is an ambassador in this world for Heaven. And his citizenship is also not of here but for heaven. And his inheritency is zealed with Holyspirit. He is gifted to talk with heavenly languages, He is is gifted to see the heavenly visions, and he edifies himself with the Holy Spirit everytime. This should be the normal practice of a believer. Reading scriptures, praying to Him only, proclaiming the kings gospel, he witness to everywhere in world for HIM only. The duties goes very far and further, and many many as well.
A sinner or imperfect man or a dead man (dead in spirit & soul) cannot worship God of Holy in purity, & sinless form, and as in justification, and as well as in the happiness of Holy Spirit. The reason being he is dead in spirit and therefore he is imperfect also and everytime he bears a guilty consciousness as he is a sinner.
BUT God sent His only begotten Son to world to make this man perfect for God thru his blood and thru His Word and thru the Holy Spirit. For what purpose? To re-establish the relationship with living God, to re-establish the unity with God, as it was in the innocence age at Garden of Aden where prior to the sin came in.
As per the heavenly plan, God saved you, (by his grace not by our merit); God gave you Holy Spirit to indwell you in the seat of inner man, that is, in your heart/consciousness.
Since God seated in your heart, God wanted man to worship Him only, witness Him only, and love Him only. But How?
Can a human being who lives under all the limitations and barriers can satisfy the God who has no limits or boundaries? Of course - cannot. But you can commit yourself completely to engage in acts of prayer and in devotion.
During this acts of worship, expression of heart (where the spirit of God seated) would be - in the form of shout, crying, singing, tears and all the sentimental and feelings and emotional as well. May talk to the holyspirit from his spirit by unformed sounds as unknown languages (tongues) which may become prophecies, may see visions (revelations), all these are the results and clear evidence of heart fillings of spirit worship.
But remember, unless the heart is filed in holy spirit and unless your soul + spirit merge into the spirit of God, I do not think none can worship truly and spiritually worship God.
Anybody can act as worshipping while all his thinking and emotions and remembrance are given for deadly matters, and for the worldly fruits. Rom 8. 8 reads that are in the flesh cannot please God. The manifestation of flesh are itemized in Gal 5. 19 - 21. There are 15 characters itemized there. Now, we can find out who we are now, in the evidence of Rom 8-8 and Gal 5: 19-21.
If the foundation is wrong how a man can worship God of truth and justice/spirit?
The calling of NT believers is to worship God in Truth and in spirit. The worship of God should not be mechanized, or should not be like a written agenda of a programme.
It should be like the symphony of a music that merge together and produce a good tune, in the same way the body, spirit, and soul have to be joined together with one aim, to merge together with the God's spirit to worship God in the Spirit.
One should remember all the graces of God and to be thankful to God while worshipping. Then the heart is filling with thanksgiving and may shout "thanks to God and praise the Lord” That sound of Thanks is the part of spiritual worship.
The OT sacrifices were not a living sacrifices but are deads. When the priest cut and remove the head of a lamb the animal became dead. Then they clean the dead pieces and cutting it and throwing it to the burning furnace. Does it a living sacrifice or a dead sacrifice? For sure it is dead. But God wanted in the New testament time the sacrifice should not be like that, it should be a living one. How? Rom 12 1-4, the NT believer must worship God by offering the body as a living sacrifice. The body must be merged in worship together with the soul, spirit. By throwing yourself (your living body, living soul, and together with your living spirit) into the Holyspirit furnace will become living sacrifice.
You can be a partaker of worship whilst you are in absent mind. This also can happen. You can also partake the worship without obeying the biblical doctrines. But that worship is not in TRUTH.
You can make voice as unknown tongues but there may not find any fruit of spirit in life. That worship is not in truth & spirit.
Remember, the Kingdom of God, is not meat, and drink; but righteousness, and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. (Meat = food, nourishment; meat offering = an offering of grain & oil).
Therefore we should understand -
Preaching is for believers but worship is concentrated to GOD.
Ps 42:1-2. David SAYS, like a deer runs to the water, my spirit quench to join with thee;
David died and joined to the OT saints, he did not get this spiritual worship experience, but we the New Testament members got this right and privilege. Therefore we should be very keen to worship always with spirit and Truth. Unless we worship in Spirit and truth our spirit may not satisfy ever. That thirst will take you to some other worldly place.
Thanks Uncle for that exposition touching different arenas of Christian Experience all focusing on Worship.
Another question in focus, that Luke and to some extend I had was regarding the physical outcome of Worship. In other words, how do we know that we have worshiped?
The only way I know that i have worshiped is when I was filled with the Holy Spirit and recieved the gift of tongues. I remember forgetting where i was not caring who was watching and just simply yielding without anything held against anyone. It was like i was completely taken out where I was at and touched by a mighty power.
These are real worship videos where people come together. They not embarrassed and afraid to worship in spirit and in truth.

Regarding the questions - about (1) "How do we know that we have worshipped?"
(2 Regarding the physical outcome of worship ? .........
These questions araise from the 1st day of Adam whilst man ousted from Garden. Through centuries human thoughts were ended in many many assumptions and all these assumptions ended in to many religions. Some they think the power of the nature is great so we have to worship the nature such as Sun, Moon, Clouds, Water, Sea, Fire, River, Mountains etc.,etc. Others thought the wonders are the great works of God so we should run after the wonder works and worship that power. Therefore the power of mountains such as Manarkad, Pumba, Sabarimala, Parumala, Guruvayoor, Himalaya - Kashi, Rameswaram, etc.... and the power of evil Demonical spirits, talking to the deads spirit(King Saul talked to Samuel thru a whichcraft), were came into effect as worship.
To avoid such wrong directions of human race, God himself revealed thru visions, prophecies, and Thru Scriptures the command of worship given as shadows, and how to please your Father of Heaven was given thru all ages after ages and prophets after prophets.
At the endtime - thru His only begotton Son, Jesus the revelation was made fully and clear to us (Heb 1. 1-3)and He explained the ways of worship and how to lead a good New Life to the whole mankind.
Now it is our duty to find out the correct and right way to adopt it and to worship in Truth & in Spirit the Lord. If not the mistake is upon us 100 percent.
Still if we are running in circles where to worship and how to worship and what to worship and how I worship, Is it correct or .... etc., etc., means, we still not sure in what and where we are, and not boldly accepting the cricifixion of Jesus, and therefore we are again ignorant of HIS crucifixion.
Regarding the physical outcome of Worship ... We are not called in to the church for worship as a paid staff. We are called by his Holy call, only to worship HIM. The main purpose of creation of man is to stay together with God and to worship HIM. God has many heavenly creaters made for HIM to worship. Angels, Cherubium, principalities, Rulers, etc., etc. are some of it. One of the Leaders was become proud in heart whilst he and his team was worshipping in front of His throne, he has been cutoff and thrown away -- is called Lucifer & party. The God never made a plan to redeem them nor any other angels.
But when man made a mistake knowingly, although he was thrown out from the Garden and destined to Death & Hell, Heaven semt the only Begotton Son to this world to redeem the whole mankind. For what ? Only to keep him back in the same position of the earlier stage.
Therefore a sinner who accepts Jesus and got redemption, should and must always worship and praise HIM of his grace. And man should not expect a reward or wage for that. A believer should not become a paid-up worker for worshipping God.
Some of the leaders of this age used to say If you worship Him then you will be healed, If you worship him then you will be promoted, if you worship him then your marriage will be done, if you worship him then you will get a grade and salary raise. This type of material benefits scheme or transactions was never mentioned from the God's Bank. It is the duty of man to worship his creator. When you worship HIM do not worship HIM for a wage scheme. ..... But from the Love of your heart towards God as explained in 1 cor 13 3-9). Also one should remember, our reward is not here, we will be appreciated, crowned, and be seated with HIM together, we will be given a new name that none was knowing, we will be benefitted from the tree of life -- all these rewards as mentioned in the chapters of Rev 2,3,& 4 will be upon the glorious consummation (Mid air- at rapture only). Once we accepted Jesus, the heavenly father is given the whole treasures of heaven to us. You became rich from him. Your asset is not of here, but of heaven. Without giving proper care and study on these subjects, the people of these days leading the believers to worship as paid up staff for heaven. Whereas I cannot agree it.
But I am not forgetting that although the mother of moses gave the breastmilk to her child at Palace of Pharoh, she was rewarded for it. Do not forget that it is the duty of a mother to breast feed her child, but to get a reward for that is the Gods special plan. Similarly if God is planning to give us some benefits to make more ease our life, could be as per His heavenly plan. donot think that is the wages of your worship.
I can explain some more lines with illustration in connection with the worship as follows :-
-------The Worship Service ------
A small boy asked an aged sailor, "What is the wind?" The old man replied, "I don't know, son; I can't tell you what the wind is, but I can tell you how to hoist a sail." It is not really necessary to know all about the wind if we know how to set our sails. We simply make them ready, and let the wind come.
This is what we are doing in a worship service-setting our sails for whatever gale the tomorrows may bring. Here, as it were, we adjust the wind-catching paraphernalia of our lives. Then we will be ready for life's gentle zephyrs or its howling storms. Here we align ourselves, set ourselves right with reality, and then, whatever winds may blow, we can receive their forward-thrusting force and sail on.
What are we doing in our assemblies? Some, like the Athenians, come only to hear the preacher say "something" (Act_17:20-21). "Is it relevant?" "Is it positive?" Are mental guidelines used in judging sermons? Some attend to judge the singing, the prayers, or the friendliness of the congregation. These go away with a host of criticisms, perhaps, or even pride, but worship has been forgotten.
Why do we gather for worship? Some come to "get it over with for a week"; to get their tickets validated once more. But those who come because they need strength in carrying their crosses know the value of true worship.
Worship has nothing to do with the song leader or the talent of the preacher. It has to do with you and your God. Let people do what they will to please themselves. "The rest will remain and worship God."
Take Our Bearings
In the old days of ocean sailing, a small boy was traveling on shipboard with his father. About once a day the boy saw the captain stand on deck with sextant in hand, and, as they used to say, "shoot the stars." The boy said to his father, "Daddy, what is the captain doing?" His father replied, "The captain is taking our bearings, seeing where we are, finding out if we are going in the right direction."
As a matter of fact, it is something of this kind that each of us is doing as we are in worship on Sunday morning. We are checking in with God; we are seeing where we are; we are finding out about our directions in relation to His will concerning our journey of life.
We can so easily become confused or lose our way out there in the weekday world of days, and we need this checkpoint. Here we touch base with the Lord of our life, and from Him we take our bearings for going on. We can deviate from the course and by winds and currents be carried far astray, unless from time to time we check in with God to set our course again.
The Meaning of Worship
Worship that is accepted by God is a privilege unique to the Christian (1Pe_2:5). It is not a right. I am permitted to offer acceptable worship only by the grace of God.
Therefore it is disheartening when children of God deliberately reject this privilege and wantonly absent themselves from the public assembly God has ordained for His glory and our good.
Consider briefly the significance of worship:
It is obedience to a divine command.
It is a means of nourishing the spirit.
It assists in achieving spiritual growth.
It is the offering of spiritual sacrifices.
It shows the world where my priorities are.
It is one means of expressing my love for God.
It encourages others in their spiritual development.
It is an avenue God has provided by which I can praise His name.
It is a way of showing my thanksgiving to God for all He has done for me.
It is a period of communion with God with the world shut out entirely.
It is an experience that should make the heart of every Christian glad!
Will you join your fellow Christians this Lord's day as they assemble to honor His name? Your Father will be looking for you.
it is an eyeopener to see how people under persecution worship - this video shows (at around 2:00 minutes) how people in Iran worship in secret
